Career & Professional Development

Is a Career Supporting Women Through Perimenopause Right for You?

September 15, 2026
By AFPA Health Coaching

Many women reach their 40s and start questioning parts of their life that used to feel settled: Their job, schedule, what they want their days to look like. For some, that questioning starts at the exact same time as perimenopause, and the timing isn’t a coincidence.

The same transition that’s reshaping your sleep, energy, and body is often reshaping how you think about time, work, and what you want the next chapter to look like.

This isn’t an article about quitting your job on impulse. It’s about a pattern worth paying attention to. For many women, the transition through perimenopause also becomes a professional turning point. The rest of this article explores why the two so often overlap, and how to recognize if it’s happening to you.

Why This Stage of Life Tends to Surface Bigger Questions

Most women enter perimenopause carrying decades of cultural messaging that treats aging as something to resist, delay, or hide. Some of what’s happening underneath that messaging is squarely physiological. According to the National Institute on Aging, the menopause transition typically begins between ages 45 and 55 and can last anywhere from two to eight years. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists notes that mood changes during this stage are a physiological response to shifting hormones. Those shifts can bring hot flashes, disrupted sleep, and changes in mood or concentration, often several at once, and rarely on a predictable schedule. When those shifts begin, it can be easy to interpret what’s happening through a lens of loss, which can leave you feeling anxious and overlooked, especially in a world that tends to value youth.

However, that framing isn’t universal. The Menopause Society has found that women’s perimenopause experience varies widely by country, shaped as much by cultural norms, societal attitudes, and access to healthcare as by biology. A loss-focused narrative is common in media and marketing, but it isn’t the only lens available.

A different lens matters because it can change how you respond to the questions that surface during perimenopause. The “What am I actually doing with my life?” energy that can emerge during perimenopause is a common response to how much is shifting at once. Perimenopause can be viewed as a transition worth honoring, not only a set of symptoms to manage. That perspective can turn what might feel like a disorienting period into a time for reflection and reassessment.

For Tiffany Grimm Fulton, BS, RYT500, CPT, XPS, a professional coach and speaker, that honoring starts with acknowledging the transition itself before getting into the details. “It begins with pausing to acknowledge the rite of passage,” she says, “and asking the client what she’s ready to let go of and what she’s looking forward to.” From there, she guides clients into creating their own ritual around the transition: An adventure or pampering date, journaling, meditating, eating food that feels good, and pausing to mark the crossing.

The Parts of Yourself This Phase Tends to Call Back

Many women reach this stage still wanting parts of themselves they set aside, whether that’s career, children, relationships, or simply time to breathe during the busy years, even if they’ve never put that wanting into words. Perimenopause has a way of calling those parts back into view, which can feel uncomfortable or spark curiosity about what else might be possible. That curiosity might show up as browsing course catalogs, following coaches online, or asking someone how they navigated a similar shift.

If you’ve found yourself unexpectedly drawn toward work that feels more meaningful, aligned with what you’ve actually lived through, or oriented toward helping other women through something you understand firsthand, that pull deserves to be taken seriously rather than dismissed as a passing mood. It’s a fairly common experience, and one that usually signals readiness for change rather than a problem. This is the same pattern behind one AFPA graduate’s shift into health coaching after her own experience with burnout.

Grimm Fulton has lived that pattern herself. “I was deep in perimenopause, leading a ten-day trip in Patagonia, when I had a huge realization that I was playing small,” she says. “When I got back, I dedicated myself to building my coaching business and let go of my corporate job.” She describes the stage as one that makes it harder to keep ignoring what you actually want. “At some point, we stop and ask, ‘Why am I here?’ A period of life so often portrayed as a decline can instead be one of the most empowering stretches of a woman’s life, and the starting point for a purpose-driven path. We start thinking about the legacy we want to leave, and that becomes the guide for how we show up each day.”

What Draws Women Toward This Specific Work

If you’re already in the health and wellness field, such as personal training, nutrition coaching, or health education, the pull toward specializing in perimenopause support often comes from a very specific frustration that you’ve likely felt. Much of the available information about perimenopause is confusing, outdated information and includes myths that your clients will bring to you. Few practitioners are equipped to address this life stage thoroughly. That’s one reason holistic health coaches are increasingly building specializations around this life stage as demand grows for lifestyle and whole-health support that complements a client’s medical care. If you’ve ever had a client, patient, or student bring you a perimenopause-related question you weren’t fully confident about answering, you already know this gap exists.

If you’re considering a career change into perimenopause health coaching, your own experience with perimenopause may be a part of what draws you to this type of work. Having lived through the transition can create a strong desire to help others navigate it with more clarity and support. That’s a valid starting point for a career change. However, turning personal experience into professional capability requires structured learning and not just lived experience.

What This Type of Work Asks of You

Supporting other women through this transition takes more than encouragement and good intentions. It means understanding the physiology behind symptoms: What’s driving them, and why. You need to be able to explain the physiology clearly, without oversimplifying it or promising things the evidence doesn’t support. That understanding also extends to areas that get less attention than the most visible symptoms, such as how hormonal shifts affect exercise programming, sleep, and metabolism.

It also means knowing where your scope of support ends and building your referral network before you need it, whether that means referring to a physician, a pelvic floor specialist, or a mental health professional. A client describing symptoms that could point to a thyroid condition, a cardiac issue, or clinical depression needs a referral, not a coaching session, even when perimenopause is also part of the picture.

Doing this work well takes both technical knowledge and a coach’s own reflection on aging and perimenopause that must be worked through ahead of time, so it shows up naturally. That reflection may include understanding your own reactions to symptoms like weight gain, memory lapses, or your own feelings about getting older before you’re asked to support someone else through theirs. What you bring to a client should come from your own lived experience.

A Structured Path Instead of a Scattered One

If any of this resonates, structured education is what turns interest in this work into the ability to do it well. Piecing together an understanding of perimenopause from articles, social media, and your own experience only goes so far, especially once you’re supporting other people through it too. Different sources often contradict each other, and a framework for evaluating them helps you recognize which claims are backed by evidence.

The Perimenopause Whole-Health Specialist Certificate course was designed to give exactly that structure. It dives into the physiology behind common symptoms, along with nutrition and movement considerations specific to this stage. It also covers the coaching and ethical frameworks for knowing what falls inside your scope and what doesn’t. That applies whether you’re expanding an existing health, wellness, coaching, or education-based practice or building toward a new direction from scratch.

That structure includes knowing how to support a client’s own pace through this transition, without pushing her to move faster or holding her back. The same idea applies to you—a career pivot into this field doesn’t need to be rushed either. It just needs a clear, intentional direction.

Enroll in the Perimenopause Whole-Health Specialist Certificate course to build the structured foundation this work requires.

Common Questions

Do I need an existing health or coaching background to take this course?

No. The course is designed to build a comprehensive foundation, which can benefit both practitioners looking to expand an existing health, wellness, coaching, or education-based practice and those exploring a new professional direction.

Is this course the same as a medical credential or license to treat patients?

No. The course provides structured, whole-health education about perimenopause. It does not confer a medical license or authorize diagnosis or treatment.

Do I need to be past my own perimenopause to do this work well?

Not necessarily. Many practitioners start this specialty certificate while they’re still in the middle of their own transition. Course materials frame a coach’s own reflection on aging and change as part of what makes the work effective, not as a disqualifier. What matters most is being far enough along in your own process that you can support a client through her experience without needing it to mirror your own timeline.
