For as long as we can remember, dieters have always treaded carefully on the topic of snacking. But now, experts state otherwise with respect to healthy snacking. “Healthy snacks ensure you won’t be ravenous come mealtime and keep your fat-burning metabolism revved up,” says Aleisha Fetters of Health magazine. So those who may be worried that snacking will derail their health and fitness goals should think again. It may just support a number of benefits, including being the key to weight loss.
Snacking may influence healthier habits overall
On one end of the spectrum, experts argue that Americans are snacking more than ever. However, of those Americans who are obese, how many are packing nuts and vegetables over chips and soda? Furthermore, how are they consuming them? For many snackers, the 2 p.m. treat is just packing on unnecessary calories. But for others it’s a healthy way to stay energized throughout the day and support a number of health and fitness goals.
The rules of snacking are simple: consume nutrient-dense foods, only eat when you’re hungry, stick to smaller portions and be mindful of your snacking habits—for example, avoid eating in front of your screen. If you’re snacking correctly and mindfully, you can increase your metabolism, regulate the blood sugar and keep hunger at bay. And for even more benefits, fill up on snacks that are rich in protein and fiber, such as a a hard-boiled egg, nuts or greek yogurt. Because as you may already know, the combination of protein and fiber can help you burn fat throughout the day.
