Eat Right and Exercise Your Way Into Spring Fashions

By Laura O’ReillySpring is in the air.  Colorful fashions in store windows remind us that it is time to shed those layers of clothing. But are we ready? We may be thinking that we want to shed some pounds first.

As we run into people in shops and on the street there will inevitably be talk of how we feel and look. We’ll hear about diet success (and failures). Weight loss programs promising quick results will dictate how we shop for groceries and order our meals in restaurants. Which is best: low carb? low fat? Can we really live on grapefruits? It’s enough to make our heads spin.

Meeting all of our body’s nutrition requirements, without overeating, keeps our metabolism functioning properly, our skin glowing and our weight stable. It also helps prevent some chronic illnesses.

Combining regular exercise with a balanced diet is the key to long-term health and weight control. Exercise works. It burns calories while we are doing it. It keeps our bodies burning calories long after we put the dumbbells back on the rack and our walking shoes in the closet.

Physical activity is invigorating, energizing and the best thing we can do for the mind and the body. Results come with consistency. Put some air in those bike tires, wear comfortable sneakers and get out and move the body.

On the way home head to the farmer’s markets and pick up some fresh fruits and veggies. Eat them in abundance. Now that’s a healthy diet!

Feeling and looking our best, at any age, is a generous reward for our efforts.
