June 2001 Vol. 6 No. 6

If there is a righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character. If there be beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there will be peace on earth.
 Chinese Proverb

The formulation of a problem is often more essential than its solution, which may be merely a matter of mathematical or experimental skill. . . . To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advances.

British Journal Lancet States FDA Far Too Cozy With Drug Industry

The clinical data confirmed “substantial and potentially life-threatening risks” but instead of withdrawing Lotronex, the FDA issued a medication guide. Conflict of interest abound as the FDA received hundreds of millions of dollars of funding from the drug industry. http://www.mercola.com/2001/may/30/drug_industry.htm

Do You Have Sugar Craving and Blood Sugar Imbalances?

Lets talk about fat. Fat is the body’s main source of energy (our bodies convert unused carbohydrates and proteins into fat in order to store them as a source of energy).

You must have a certain amount of fat. But, more and more people are eating a non-fat diet, thinking it is a way to lose weight. There are a lot of “non-fat” food choices today, and most are filled with empty calories like sugars and starches. Imagine your poor body trying to remain balanced and stable — dealing with temporary sugar rushes, only to send out the signal for more sugar, hence the sugar craving and blood sugar imbalances.

Sugar bingers routinely eat 60 to 70% more calories the following meal!

It just turns into a merry-go-round that leads to illness, and of course, weight gain. Not to mention, the mood swing roller coaster rides. This problem is not just an adult problem. Children are constantly fed sugary cereals, junk food and snacks and sodas — think how this affects their feelings and behavior!

Natural Suggestions

Start with a low-glycemic diet which is a diet that keeps insulin levels low so fewer calories are turned into fat and more are burned for energy.  This diet also optimizes brain biochemistry, so that you feel more comfortable with a decreased desire to crave. This diet is full of whole natural foods like plant fiber foods.  Some spices help to decrease sugar cravings — add the following to every meal, even cereal, sandwiches, soups or salads: cinnamon, clove and bay leaf.

Herbs to help sugar craving fall into three categories:

1) to reduce sugar cravings

2) to balance low blood sugar

3) to balance high blood sugar.

Ginseng is a key herb for helping to regulate blood sugar and control sugar cravings. Other natural aids for normalizing blood sugar levels include:

Spirulina - a craving for sweets may indicate that you need more protein.  Green protein from spirulina can relieve sweet cravings with a daily supplement. Bee pollen and royal jelly also provide protein energy, amino acids and pantothenic acid for adrenal stimulation.

Sweating-brought on by hard physical work helps to get rid of sugar cravings — dieters who take a workout or work out doors 2 to 3 times a week have more balanced blood sugar levels and reduced sugar cravings.  Try stevia rebaudiana, a sweet leafy herb. Research shows that stevia can actually regulate blood sugar.

Resistance to Whooping Cough Vaccine Is Growing

It seems like the bacterium is changing part of its coat, thereby disguising itself. In recent years, whooping cough has been making something of a comeback in the Netherlands, the United States and elsewhere. http://www.mercola.com/2001/jun/2/whooping_cough.htm

Tanning Beds Increase Cancer Threat

Suntan salons tend to like to make the claim that their facilities are safe - and they are not. http://www.mercola.com/2001/jun/2/tanning_beds.htm

Fluoride in the Water Increases Hip and Bone Fractures

A recently published study has found that the risk of having a hip fracture greatly increases when elevated levels of fluoride are present in the water. http://www.mercola.com/2001/jun/2/fluoride.htm

The Toxic Toothpaste

Fluoride is not the beneficial additive that is purported to be. Parents should try to ensure that their child’s intake of fluoride is minimized as much as possible. http://www.mercola.com/2001/may/30/toothpaste.htm

Mammography Enters the Depths of Deceit

The situation with mammography is not a simple one, as it has not been conclusively shown to save lives, despite the fact that it can detect some cancers. Also, in addition to the risks associated with false-positives, is the possible risks associated with the radiation exposure from annual mammograms. http://www.mercola.com/2001/may/16/mammography.htm

Brain Still Developing in Middle Age, Scans Show

While the rest of the body stops growing long beforehand, the brain seems to keep on developing into middle age, new research suggests. The findings could prove important in the prevention of age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The brain is much more like a muscle than we ever thought. That is, the brain’s structure does change over time and it may be possible to, in essence, “bulk up” the brain throughout much of adulthood.

Brain volume is commonly believed to stop expanding after age 20. But in MRI brain scans of 70 healthy men between the ages of 19 and 76, researchers found that the brain’s white matter continued to increase until the mid- to late-40s.

Specifically, the brain kept growing in the temporal lobe and the frontal lobe–the part of the brain that makes us human. This continued brain growth into middle-age can be associated with better emotional development and wisdom.

Knowing how the brain changes over time is important in understanding brain-related conditions ranging from schizophrenia to drug addiction to Alzheimer’s disease. If the brain keeps maturing in adulthood, that means drug use, poor nutrition or other assaults on the brain could arrest a person’s full development.

On the other hand, continuing to stimulate and challenge the brain throughout adulthood might promote its growth–just as exercise builds muscle. In the future, the brain imaging used in this study may help monitor age-related changes in people’s brain volume and help signal deterioration before symptoms are apparent.

When You Were A Child, Who Protected You?

A lot of medical doctors today know enough to withhold vaccines from their own children, even though they continue to administer them to patients. Others just take the intellectually impotent position that “we don’t really know enough not to vaccinate people.” Now, if doctors are going to stick a needle into a child’s arm and inject something into the bloodstream, they should be absolutely certain that they have a thorough knowledge of all the short-term and long-term consequences. Is that asking too much? And before a parent lets a doctor do such a thing, they need to be equally well-informed.

A parent should be able to ask the pediatrician, “Before you inject my child, can you prove to me that vaccines are safe and necessary? “Try that sometime”.

It makes one wonder: if those in power were faced with a choice between the health of our children and $30 billion, which would they choose? And if those involved in the vaccine industry had actually done the studies and discovered that, beyond all doubt, vaccinations were not only ineffective but instead are the cause of much disease and death, would they tell us? would we be reading about it in the New York Times?

The Mystery in Your Milk
by Jane Akre & Steve Wilson

The report that Monsanto and Fox TV didn’t want you to see. Published for the first time.

Jane Akre and Steve Wilson, a respected reporting team at WTTV, a Fox Network Station in Tampa, Florida, were fired from their jobs after refusing to broadcast what they knew and documented to be false and distorted information about Monsanto’s bovine growth hormone (BGH) — a genetically engineered product that has been linked to the proliferation of breast, prostate, and colon cancer cells in humans.

On August 28, 2000, a Florida jury unanimously decided that Akre had been fired for threatening to blow the whistle on Fox for pressuring her and Wilson to broadcast a false, distorted and slanted news report and awarded her $425,000 for lost wages and damages. Fox is appealing.

This is the first time that the script that got the reporters in trouble has appeared in print. This important document has been edited for length but not censored. For the full version, go to the website: http://www.foxbghsuit.com http://www.mercola.com/2001/may/26/mystery_milk.htm

Fitness Questions

Question: My son is 15 and trying to gain muscle/weight via weight lifting. Are any of the supplements..proteins, creatine, etc. deemed to be safe, effective, or recommended?

Answer: He needs to eat high quality foods [whole grains, stone ground whole wheat, bottled water [at least 1/2 gallon daily], fresh vegetables and fruits.

Avoid soda, processed foods and dairy products.

Avoid over-training [the biggest mistake among young athletes.  Train with weights no more than twice weekly for the major muscle groups [Monday-Thursday -upper body], Tuesday-Friday [lower body]

Keep workouts brief [20-25 minutes] for strength training. Avoid one rep maximums-instead work to control the weight [8-10 seconds to complete each rep-for between 5-8 reps]

This will supply him with the necessary stimulus for growth and the foods and his long body will do the rest.
